Band to Know: Beware the Darkness, performing ”Howl” on Conan

We covered them last year, but they’ve finally started making moves. They’ll be touring the US this summer and then heading off to open up for the Smashing Pumpkins in Europe.

Buzzbands.LA on KCSN

The spring pledge drive winds down this weekend on KCSN, and on tonight’s L.A. Buzz Bands Show, I will again be asking that you become a contributing member. If you’ve had your ear to the ground (and the airwaves) the past two years, you know that KCSN has become a player in L.A. radio, thanks to a listener-supported, non-commercial format that gives you a diverse playlist and music 24/7. It’s been my privilege to host the L.A. Buzz Bands Show for 93 weeks now, doing what I enjoy, supporting the local scene. So we’re asking that you reciprocate some of that support.

In between asking you to call (800) 795-5276 and pledge (for as little as $50, you score some nice premiums), I will still have time to highlight music from some notable album releases by emerging L.A. artists on this week’s show. We’ll hear from the Neighbourhood, Youngblood Hawke, Victory and Sara Melson — whose new albums came out this past week — and several others whose albums come out in the next two weeks, including Hanni El Khatib, Big Black Delta, Hands and Touché. Plus, I’ll have new singles from Cillie Barnes and Landon Marcus, along with something new and tasty from old pals The 88.

Coachella 2013: Operation Desert Storm? Wind, sand and dust bring festival to a wheezing conclusion

Write your own punchline about what might have enraged the Coachella gods, but festival-goers were left gasping at the finish line on Sunday when a persistent windstorm wreaked havoc on eyes, noses, skin and lungs. The skies turned angry at midafternoon (that’s an un-color-corrected image above), and the rest of the day was a coughing fit waiting to happen, unless you were one of the smart ones with a kerchief.
There was refuge in the tents. On the main stage and at the Outdoor Theatre, the likes of Vampire Weekend, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Pretty Lights and Wu-Tang Clan soldiered on despite increasingly thinning crowds. Red Hot Chili Peppers thrived in their role as hometown heroes, gamely thrilling their fans with hits even though some of their planned visuals and pyrotechnic displays were scotched due to the weather.
Coming up: our recaps from selected Sunday sets…

It’s heavy on the pixels and lightly out of focus but we’ve managed to unscramble some of the bands playing at the Jubilee Music & Arts Festival.
How many can you get?

Coachella 2013: Ten don’t-miss sets from a scribe who thinks there are really about 40 don’t-miss sets

Dear Coachella: This post could be about 38 bands long, but I’m just afraid of getting RSI. I know it’s become fashionable to take potshots at your lineup — I have no idea what warped sense of entitlement that comes from. You have a nice product, and the excellence in the 2013 lineup runs deep. I just hope that in the wee hours of Sunday I’m not dead for Dead Can Dance.
Below, belying my Anglophile tendencies, the 10 sets I do not want to miss (a list also informed, it should be pointed out, that I have visited and revisited a lot of bands I would normally recommend — right, Local Natives?):

Hanni El Khatib rocked a big part of our 2011 — he played our Buzz Bands LA party in Austin and released one of our favorite albums of the year “Will the Guns Come Out.” Now, anticipation for his second album, the Dan Auerbach-produced “Head in the Dirt” is high. It’s coming April 30, as El Khatib steps up from a two-piece setting into a full-band format. At a Converse Rubber Tracks showcase this year in Austin, he blasted through his single “Family,” already one of our favorites.
